May 23, 2010 - Agreed. His 'Pour mon ame' was sensational and worth turning up at the theatre just for that. However Dessay was absolutely superb too and in no way overshadowed. Her comedic acting was exceptional. I had decided before the end of the first act that I'd be queuing up for day tickets (it's naturally sold out) to see this production again this week :)
May 18, 2010 - Not least because this particular role was by far in excess of Domingo's tessitura, capabiltiy or ability. Domingo is a fine Verdian tenor, NOT a performer of Bel Canto. Also, whilst he was more musically gifted than Pavarotti, having a much larger repetory, it doesn't mean that he was his equal........
Oct 3, 2009 - Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!
Je vais marcher sous vos drapeaux.
L'amour qui m'a tourné la tête
Désormais, désormais, me rend un héros.
Ah! quel bonheur oui mes amis.
Je vais marcher sous vos drapeaux.
Oui, celle pour qui je respire,
A mes voeux a daigné sourire
Et ce doux espoir de bonheur
Trouble ma raison et mon coeur!
Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!
Je vais marcher sous vos drapeaux.
Oct 3, 2009 - Ah, my friends, what a day for celebrating!
I shall march under your flags.
Love, which has turned my head,
from now on is making me into a hero.
Ah, what happiness, yes my friends
I shall march under your flags.
Yes, she for whom I live and breathe
has deigned to smile upon my vows.
And this sweet hope of happiness
has shaken my mind and my heart.
Ah, my friends, what a day for celebrating!
I shall march under your flags.
Aug 3, 2009 - I agree with most of the comments here about some of the good to very good tenors, but I am astounded that not once do i see the name of the exceptionally great Placido Domingo, the one tenor of the Pavorotti era who was his equal.
Jun 5, 2009 - If you like JUAN DIEGO FLOREZ check THE 30 TENORS in my playlist SUPER TENOR ARIAS ( including CLAUDIO SOTELO performing ARIA DEL CIRUJANO as a world première for YOU TUBE ) and tell me which one you prefer.
Mar 14, 2009 - I have see Florez since 2002 at Covent Garden, and can attest that he always gets a great ovation from the cognoscienti. He can also act better that Pavarotti. He is a true bel canto singer in the mould of Pinza and Kraus. I think he would be good in Werther too, but this can wait for later.
Dec 10, 2008 - Funny. I just went to see Don Giovanni at the Met and I was thinking how wonderful it would be to hear Florez as Don Ottavio. It seems so perfect for him, if too small a part now that he is such a star.
Sep 11, 2008 - Of course you cannot compare them, they are different types of tenors. Apples and oranges, my friend. They're both wonderful, regardless.
Aug 15, 2008 - "Of course he's one of the best singers... but, PLUS, he's cute." -Dessay
You said it girl. THAT voice AND the boyish charm? I'd want to play opposite him too!!
Jul 16, 2008 - I full agree this with: this is too mechanical, the pronunciation so so (too concentrated on reaching the notes than on the partition) and truly not my cup of tea. Donizetti is not a game nore a contest of high notes.... Pavarotti perhaps; but I should mention Rockwell Blacke in this part. As for Mr. Florez, I certainly do not deny his capacities but they are not used properly as his first approach with Verdi can show.
Apr 28, 2008 - I fully agree with joanmanuel, that tie is horrible indeed. But sometimes we have to bear even worse spiritual pains to be able to listen to miraculous voices like Juan Diego's. Maybe the golden years of Gigli and Schipa will have after all some echo in our time so deprived of "tenores di grazia" and simply brilliant voices like those two late stars.
