May 30, 2012 - Windmills in areas where there isn't a lot of trees, houses, and obstructions isn't a bad idea. I agree with the small scale solar operation. Thermal water heaters are good in the south, but not so much in the north. Build an Earth Tube system, and really reap the rewards of climate control indoors!
Apr 3, 2012 - ATTENTION: 1 week until the Philly Earthship conference with Michael Reynolds (April 6,7,8), the founder of Earthships.. go to the main earthship website for tix/ info!
Mar 31, 2012 - I just can't get over people promoting small scale solar-to-electric and wind-to-electric (especially short roof top installations). It requires factories to produce all those appliances and they are inefficient electric generators - not to mention the inefficient battery storage. The big picture is important.
Mar 9, 2012 - My understanding of it is they are used to reduced the amount of cement and adobe mud needed as well as put recyclable materials to use.
Feb 19, 2012 - Average Joe, 1 Get your permits in order 2 collect tires, cardboard and bottles, stack these items neatly under a tarp until you have enough, two years, three? 3 rent a 580 for a weekend and dig. 4 invite friends and family to stack and pound tires 5 search the building material recyclers for stuff. The point is you can build one over time as you have the funds available and they can be built in phases. biggest hurdle is Land and permits, that and the occasional asshat neighbor.
Jan 18, 2012 - For all of you living between DC and Boston: Michael Reynolds will be doing a 3 day conference in Philly 4/17 to 4/19 on how to build these! Philly will be building the first official urban Earthship! check out the earthship website and search for philly
