Jun 13, 2013 - Thanks for your reply, but unfortunately I live in New York city and I don't have a campfire handy. I've read that I should boil water or even use vinegar/salt, what do you think?
Jun 13, 2013 - This is such a cool video. I have some burnt residue on my pan but don't have a self-cleaning oven or a woodstove, so I'm not sure how to start the cleaning process. Any idea how to repair?
May 1, 2013 - I always fry a skillet of potatoes first after stripping my cast iron in the camp fire. Or bake a pan of cornbread in it. It works beautifully. When cooking your eggs, cover the pan immediately after breaking the egg in the pan, and let set over medium heat for about 2 minutes. No turning, and the egg white sets beautifully, leaving the yellow runny, or cook longer for hard yolks. The lid works like a steamer.
Apr 21, 2013 - Try this: put two hands of Salt in the Pan After selfcleaning in the Oven, and Heat the Salt at the Oven, Salt Becomes Brown. After Then, seal the Pan with sunflower Oil. That's ließ work than Using Paper.
Apr 18, 2013 - I bought a Wagner from e-bay that wasn't in terrible shape but I wanted to start from scratch. After carefully reading the recommended article, I placed my skillet on a coffee mug and ran the self-cleaning cycle of my stove. The next morning I was amazed. I cleaned it and seasoned it with palm oil. The surface is so slick that I have to chase an egg around the pan. I will have to get that spatula that I saw you use. Thanks for the great tip. Will be getting more pans from e-bay soon.
Apr 8, 2013 - Thank You. I have two real rusty corn muffin pans that I rescued.
Rubbing with paper towels is not going to cut it. I was thinking wire brush or steel wool. Never thought of the vinegar.
Apr 8, 2013 - I know that I have had terrible luck with olive oil: the seasoning comes off far too easily. And I know that somebody wrote that flax seed was the best, but I've heard more than a half dozen reports that flax seed oil was also terrible. The best results for seasoning have been with lard.
Mar 31, 2013 - A self-cleaning oven uses high temperatures (bout 900 degrees Fahrenheit or 500 degrees Celsius) to burn off foods from baking without the use of any chemicals. So the only other ways to do it w/o a self cleaning oven would be to throw it in your fireplace or over hot coals and keep it there until all the excess flakes off. Or, use an outdoor stove - put the pan on the stove top and heat for a really really long time. If you do this be very careful as it will be hot as a coal and it will smoke.
Mar 24, 2013 - you stole my thunder lol yup soak in Vinegar to remove rust and clean with a steal brush,or a wire brush hooked to your common drill
